Making Your Garden Tomatoes Friendly
Let’s face it. Everybody loves tomatoes in their food. For gardening enthusiasts, this is just a bonus for them – having tomatoes in their garden. If you are planning to have your vegetable garden in your own back yard, never forget to consider tomatoes as one the varieties you consider to plant. Tomatoes are well adopted plants able to grow in a whole wide range of elevation, temperature and moisture requirements. They are low-maintenance vegetables that are rich in vitamins and minerals and are rich source of lycopene. Lycopene can prevent many kinds of cancers. What is there not to like about tomatoes? The first thing you need to set is the location of the garden. Make sure there is enough sunlight throughout the day. If you are planning to have the tomatoes indoor, place it near the window in the south side of the house. Plant the tomatoes away from tress and buildings that can cast a shadow over it. Make sure also for good drainage so that the tomato will not be prone to blossom-end rot.
In preparing the soil, you can put in peat moss and other organic materials like well rotted manure. Tomatoes can grow better in a neutral soil with a PH level of 6.5 to 7.0.
In the garden lay-out, make sure that the plants are well spaced. This will make it easier for you to water them and prepare them for transplantation. When the time comes that you need to set the plants, make sure that the weather is warm enough (at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit). Plant the tomatoes deeper, with the lowest leaves in its stem barely touching the ground. This will facilitate the growth of more roots in lesser time, making the tomatoes settle faster. Space the tomatoes plants 24 to 36 inches from each other depending on the size and variety of the tomatoes. The rows should be 4 to 5 feet apart.
