Soil For Vegetable Garden
If you think it takes a “natural” to grow a teeming vegetable garden, think again. The success of the garden depends much more on science than on its art. The constant is sunlight and good soil. Plants will naturally grow in any soil, but you just do not want to grow them. You want them to thrive and get the best nutrients from the soil. This will make them yield more and have the ability to fight pests. The soil for vegetable garden is specifically formulated to answer to the needs of the plant and ensure that it is healthy, able to mature in time.
Good soil for vegetable garden must have 50 percent of porous material and 50 percent solid material. This will give the plant an ideal volume of air and moisture around it making it more conducive for plant growth. The best soil for a garden is loam. This soil contains 40 percent sand, 40 percent silt and 20 percent clay. This mixture enables the loam to be responsive to water and sunlight, maximizing available natural resources for the plants.
Fortunately you can change the consistency of your soil and its structure by introducing organic matter to it. This can make it hold more water and facilitate proper drainage during heavy downpours. And of course it provides the soil with nutrients organically. Failing to get the right mix for your soil can result to mediocre plant growth.
Organic matter can consists of sawdust, wood chips, corncobs, straw, grass clippings and so much more. Even your compost pit can give you a good amount of organic matter for your garden. If you do not have compost pit, it is advisable for you to make one to supply your needs in the garden.
When preparing soil for vegetable garden, you can use a spade to turn over the soil and till it. This process is ideal for every plant cycle or every time you prepare the ground for planting. Do not assume that the soil that you have prepared for the past planting can still support new growth. You must again fertilize the soil with balanced organic fertilizer and introduce more organic matter. This way your garden will not fail your expectations all year round.
