Vegetable Container Gardening: Enjoying Fresh Produce In The Middle Of The City

Vegetable container gardening is a very good alternative for people living in a concrete jungle of apartments and urban dwellings. It is almost impossible to think to have your own garden in the middle of the city without a single patch of soil. But substituting a pot or other containers for the actual garden on the ground will be more than enough to grow and sustain a vegetable plant to maturity. Growing vegetables is good for having an alternative source of vegetables. Not only you can be sure of pesticide-free fresh vegetables in your plate, you can also be self sufficient in your daily food needs. In this modern, all-instant age, that is a remarkable at the same time significant feat.

The first thing that you need to have is a container. You can use various containers already available in your house. Wooden boxes, wire baskets, buckets and even pails will do. Be sure to drill a hole to your containers’ bottom for proper drainage.

Make sure that your containers are light colored. If this is not the case, you can choose to paint the containers. Dark colored containers can damage your vegetables by exposing its roots to too much to heat. This is the case when the container is dark as it absorbs heat very well.

Be sure to have an adequately sized container for your vegetable. If your vegetable is fairly “big”, using a small container will constrict its roots and can definitely stunts its growth, giving you sub standard yields during harvest. An eggplant-sized vegetable should have a 5-gallon container to support it through harvest time.

It is important to have a good mix of soil to have your vegetable planted in. Fertilizer is also necessary. You can use a complete organic fertilizer that would be just enough to fertilize the whole soil and sustain the vegetable to one whole cycle of planting and harvesting.

Vegetable container gardening would need a more vigilant stance on watering. Since you are your vegetables’ only source of much needed water, you must always be there when it needs moisture. Never wait for the plant to wither. As the plant matures and grows, its water demands can also increase. Be on the lookout everyday for its watering needs.
